Peter Schmeichel shared a wholesome moment with his son Kasper by hugging him live on TV as Denmark kept England at bay.

Denmark managed to prevent England from claiming victory on Thursday in Frankfurt and might have stolen a win themselves on another day as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Euro 2024.

Harry Kane had put the Three Lions ahead in the first half before Morten Hjulmand’s rocket saw the Danes draw level moments later as England continued to toil.

Gareth Southgate’s men had just four shots on target including the goal while Schmeichel was never truly tested but nevertheless gave a typically hearty display between the posts for Denmark.

After the match, there was a touching moment as he was interviewed by his father Peter, arguably one of the greatest goalkeepers in history and Manchester United legend, now a pundit for FOX Sports.

Having spoken to his son, Schmeichel Sr concluded his interview by saying: “I do a lot of post-match interviews, but I never do this.”

It was here when Schmeichel hugged his son live on television in a heart-warming moment.

Kasper then gifted his father his match-worn shirt, with the legendary figure chuckling and saying: “Ah, here you go!”

They shared a handshake before walking off-screen with big smiles on their faces.

While his father’s career remains one of the best for a goalkeeper, having won five Premier League titles with United and winning the 1992 European Championship with Denmark, his son has not had a bad time of it either.

Now aged 37, Schmeichel Jr is the most senior player in Kasper Hjulmand’s side and has made 102 caps for his country.

Currently playing for Anderlecht after a season at OGC Nice, he famously won the Premier League against the odds with Leicester in 2015/16.

And his father wants him to return to English football sooner rather than later despite being in the twilight of his career.

Speaking on White and Jordan, the former Manchester City, Aston Villa and Sporting keeper said: “I really want to see him back in the Premier League. I think that’s where he belongs.

“Let’s hope these Euros remind people of him because I’d love to see him back there.

“Even though you try to put some distance between you and football emotionally, I still want him in there because I’m so used to that.”

England will face Slovenia on Tuesday in their final group stage match knowing that a win will see them top the group, while Denmark face Serbia on the same day needing a similar result.
