Manchester United vs Brentford predictions

When it rains, it pours.

Last weekend a video went viral on social media showing Manchester United fans getting drenched by a leaking roof at Old Trafford during the 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace. The metaphors write themselves.

United are no longer the best in class on or off the pitch. Old Trafford, in truth, is a second-rate stadium these days. The team might not even be that good.

Malaise has set in once more. Every time United look to be moving in the right direction, something goes wrong.

There have been moments under each of the permanent post-Alex Ferguson managers where it seemed like the Red Devils had finally got it together. But David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer soon realised that those fleeting episodes were false dawns.

So here we are, a decade on from Ferguson’s retirement, and United remain stuck on 20 league titles and seemingly no closer to winning a 21st.

Erik ten Hag may be beginning to fear that he could follow in the footsteps of the coaches listed above by departing Old Trafford after a disappointing downturn.

We are not there yet. Ten Hag deserves time to turn things around, and the Dutchman is far from the only one culpable for United’s poor start to the season.

But rightly or wrongly, the manager usually pays the price when results go south.

United head into this weekend’s meeting with Brentford in 10th place in the Premier League table. Alas, a leaking roof is not the only thing this club has to worry about.

📝 Manchester United vs Brentford betting tips

Manchester United are stuck in a rut and a failure to win on Saturday would worsen the mood at Old Trafford.

Manchester United to win – 4/6 (bet365)

After that surprise 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace last weekend, Manchester United’s misery was compounded on Tuesday night.

A 3-2 victory for Galatasaray, for whom former Palace and United forward Wilfried Zaha acored in the first half, means United have now lost their first two Champions League games of the campaign.

They are already up against it as they seek to qualify for the knockout phase of Europe’s principal club competition.

Clearly things are not going well for United right now. Given the mood around the place, it is hard to envisage a dazzling display of attacking football from the home team on Saturday.

But it is worth bearing in mind that Brentford are struggling too. They have won just one of their seven league games up to now. The west Londoners are now only three points outside the bottom three.

So while it will not necessarily be pretty, United should have enough to come out on top here.

If not, then the pressure really will start to mount on Ten Hag over the October international break, which follows this round of Premier League fixtures.

⚽ Back Manchester United to win at 4/6 with bet365 ⚽

Both teams to score – 7/10 (bet365)

Manchester United are struggling in virtually every area of the pitch, but their biggest problem of all is at the back.

Shipping three goals to Galatasaray was just the latest example of Ten Hag’s team being unable to keep an opposition attack quiet.

United have conceded the ninth-most goals in the Premier League so far in 2023/24, while they have kept only three clean sheets in their 10 matches in all competitions (and one of those, against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening weekend, was fortuitous to say the least).

United have not had their first-choice backline available much this term, yet the problems are not restricted to the four defenders.

Casemiro, who was sent off against Galatasaray last time out, has looked vulnerable at the base of midfield, even while acknowledging that he has not always had sufficient support in the engine room.

Brentford clearly miss Ivan Toney but they are still creating chances. In the expected goals table, which ranks the quality of opportunities each team fashions, the Bees rank a respectable ninth – two spots higher than Manchester United, incidentally.

Goals at both ends is the way to go at Old Trafford on Saturday.

⚽ Tip both teams to score at 7/10 with bet365 ⚽

Bruno Fernandes to score any time – 5/2 (bet365)

Bruno Fernandes’ penchant for whining at all and sundry often rubs people up the wrong way. His on-field demeanour is the main reason many questioned Ten Hag’s decision to hand him the captain’s armband over the summer.

But Fernandes demonstrates his leadership qualities in other ways. He is the type of player who always demands the ball, even when things are not going well.

Fernandes is not one to hide and for all his imperfections he tends to stand up to be counted. That is why he is the best choice to find the net for Manchester United this week.

The Portugal international has scored twice already this term, which is enough to make him United’s outright leading goal-getter in the Premier League.

We fancy Fernandes’ chances of adding to his tally against Brentford.

⚽ Choose Bruno Fernandes as an anytime goalscorer at 5/2 with bet365 ⚽
