Daniil Medvedev issued a chilling warning that players could die amid the extreme conditions at the US Open on Wednesday.

The third seed booked his place in the semi-finals of the tournament with a 6-4 6-3 6-4 win against eighth seed Andrey Rublev.

However, the match was somewhat overshadowed by the extreme conditions at Flushing Meadows, with both players looking visibly fatigued.

And it was late in the third set when Medvedev, who called for the trainer twice for an asthma pump, made a chilling prediction on a courtside camera.

“One player is gonna die. And they’re gonna see,” he was heard saying.

Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the quarter-final clash was played, had its roof closed with temperatures reaching as high as 34C. It’s understood humidity reached over 50 per cent on Tuesday.

Asked about how hard it was to play in the extreme conditions, Medvedev said it was one of the worst he’s ever experienced and even struggled to see the ball at points.

“Yeah, this and Tokyo Olympic Games. It was brutal,” he said in response to a question asking him if it was one of the worst conditions he’s ever played in.

“The only good thing I see from playing in these conditions is that both suffer. It’s tough for both of us.

“There were some ups and downs… honestly at the end of the first set I kind of couldn’t see the ball anymore.

“I kind of played with sensations. I tried to go for it, tried to run, tried to catch the balls and he did the same sometimes.

“Before the point I was like, ‘wow, it seems like he cannot run anymore… we were tired all the time. Brutal conditions and super tough to play in.”

The 2021 US Open champion will face the winner of the Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev clash, which takes place later on Wednesday, in the final four.
