But he was helped out by the fact that Cottagers right-back Kenny Tete had raced off the pitch moments before.

The defender was already on the sidelines after his boot was ripped in half by a challenge.

And the Dutchman was told he had to race back to the changing room to get a replacement boot – and it could not come at a worst time.

The space vacated by Tete was exposed by Ivan Perisic, who took full advantage before crossing to Richarlison.

The Tottenham star celebrated wildly while Tete was still in the changing room, who appeared moments later – but much too late from a Fulham perspective.

Ange Postecoglou’s side fell behind in the first half when defender Micky van de Ven turned the ball in his own net.

The Australian coach named a heavily-changed side to the one that beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the weekend.

Just Richarlison and Van de Ven were the only survivors – coincidentally the two players to get on the scoresheet.

And hardly in normal circumstances after the Dutch defender, who signed from Wolfsburg, scored his second own-goal of the season.

After a cross was delivered in from the left-hand side with pace, the ball hit the 22-year-old.

It deflected wildly off his boot and flew over Fraser Forster, who had virtually no time to react.

Tottenham looked lifeless throughout the first-half and Dane Scarlett replaced Giovani Lo Celso and changed the system, giving Spurs more attacking output.

But Fulham still stuck to their guns with Tete keeping Perisic quiet throughout the Carabao Cup tie.

However, the moment he left the pitch, the Croatian wasted no time making the best of the situation.

Bobby Decordova-Reid filled in at right-back but was easily beaten by the former Inter Milan star, who then delivered a deep cross for Richarlison to nod home.
